What we believe

We believe that the Bible is the inerrant word of God, written by men as inspired by the Holy Spirit.

2 Timothy 3:16-17: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works."

Creation

In the beginning was the Lord Jesus Christ - the Creator God of the Bible (John 1:1-3, Colossians, Hebrews 1:2). The Lord God created the entire universe (Genesis 1) in a period of 6 literal 24hr days. On the 7th day God rested. The creation was perfect (Genesis 1:31). God made man in His own image- an intelligent and spiritual being, capable of a relationship with Him (Genesis 1:27). All human life is precious in God's sight.

The origin of Sin

Since the disobedience of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden (Genesis 3), all people have consequently been born in sin (Psalm 51:5, Romans 5:12). Our nature is fallen (Romans 3:23) and deserving of God's wrath and condemnation (Romans 6:23).

The Flood

God sent a global flood to destroy man from the earth because man had become so wicked (Genesis 6:5). However God saved Noah (Genesis 6:8; 7:1) and his family by warning him to construct the Ark, and to take onboard 2 of each kind of unclean animal, and 7 of each clean animal, so as to repopulate the earth (Genesis 9:1).

Confusion with Languages

All the people shared a single language (Genesis 11:1) and sought together to build a city with a tower reaching above the clouds (Genesis 11:4). A place where they would set themselves up in the place of God over all the people. However the Lord thwarted their plan by confusing their language (Genesis 11:7-8) so that they spread out in their people groups over the face of the whole earth.

The Saviour

Ever since the fall and the corruption of the human race (Genesis 3) man was looking forward to the promised messiah who would come to save the people from their sin. The Hebrew prophets foretold of His virgin birth in Bethlehem (Isaiah 7:14, Micah 5:2) to His sacrificial death (Isaiah 53). In approximately 4BC The Lord God took on flesh and was born in a manger in Bethlehem. He was both fully human and fully God (John 1), feeling our pain and sharing in our suffering (Hebrews 4:15), yet living a sinless life (Hebrews 5:9).

His sacrificial death

Jesus was handed over by the Jewish chief priests, to the Romans to be killed (Matthew 27:1-2). He was then crucified under Pontius Pilate. Jesus willingly laid down His life, as this is what He had planned to do - sacrificing His perfect self, so that He might be punished for our sin (John 10:11). After three days Jesus rose from the tomb (Matthew 28:6) and after another 40 days ascended to Heaven (Luke 24:51).

The final Judgment

All will be raised, some to eternal life, and some to eternal punishment (Romans 2:6-8, Revelation 20:11-15). Some will be cast into the lake of fire - a place of eternal punishment (Revelation 21:8). Others shall live forever with God in His Kingdom. There will be a new Heaven and a new Earth, perfect and complete. "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away." (Revelation 21:4).

The Gospel

Those who call upon the name of the Lord to save them, repent (turn from their sin) and believe in Jesus shall have eternal life in God's Kingdom (Romans 10:13). No one is without excuse, for God's work is clearly evident in His creation (Romans 1:20), but it is the Christian's duty to warn all people throughout the world that they are sinners (Matthew 28:19-20, 2nd Timothy 4:5), and they need salvation. People seek salvation in all manner of different ways, but we cannot save ourselves from ourselves - only God can save mankind. Jesus is God, and he died for us (Romans 5:8). Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6).

The Bible and Science

Sadly most people today make a distinction between 'Religion' and 'Science'. However a proper understanding of the world will lead us to realise that the two are inseparable, and this is the view held by the world's greatest scientists.

Operational science is good and valid but historical science which is faith based is dangerous when it contradicts the word of God.

Below are some quotes from some of the world's most famous scientists. Only Isaac Newton was a Christian, but none of them claim that science can answer life's most fundamental questions.

George F.R.Ellis: "People need to be aware there is a range of models that could explain the observations... For example, I can construct you a spherically symmetrical universe with the Earth at its centre and you cannot disprove it based on observations...You can only exclude it on philosophical grounds...we are using philosophical criteria in choosing our models. A lot of cosmology tries to hide that."

This does not mean that we hold the view that the catholic church once did - that the earth is the centre of the universe. This view is not taught in the Bible, it was taught as catholic tradition (which is neither inspired nor inerrant).

However scientifically it is entirely possible. It is ruled out on the grounds that there is no reason why it should be at the centre. The philosophical view of the atheistic naturalist scientist (as opposed to the observational scientist) is that human life is of no more worth or value than a dust cloud or a black hole.

In the words of Albert Einstein:
"Science can only ascertain what is, but not what should be, and outside its domain value judgments of all kinds remain necessary."

"One thing I have learned in a long life- that all science, measured against reality, is primitive and childlike."

"Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind."

Isaac Newton:
"No sciences are better attested than the religion of the Bible."

It is only with an understanding of how the universe came to be that we can see any relevance or purpose in anything. No intelligently designed creation of artwork or mechanical device can ever compare to the complexity or beauty of God's creation.
