Thought for the Day 1
Whenever we think about how big our solar system is we find its size difficult to comprehend, yet when we remember that our solar system is a very small speck in our Milky Way galaxy our minds cannot take it in, yet it is estimated that there are a 100 billion galaxies in the universe, many comprising billions of stars.
This universe is absolutely massive yet earth which is only a very tiny part of it is in exactly the right place for life to survive and prosper. Many believe that this fact happened by chance but God says in the Bible that He did not create earth to be, “empty, but formed it to be inhabited.”1
If the earth was a little further away from the sun everything would freeze up, and if it was a little closer everything would burn up. If the earth was a little closer to the moon the tides would be too strong and would flood the earth and if it was a little further away then the oceans would become stagnant and marine life would suffer. There is much evidence of very careful fine tuning in the universe which points to a supernatural designer.
Science is observation and experiment and can explain the function of things. Science can explain that the earth spins on an axis, and that it takes earth approximately one year to orbit the sun. Science can also provide us with technology and medicine but even though science is good science is limited.
Science can provide us with answers about the function of things but what science cannot do is explain the beginning of things because the beginning was never observed and the beginning can never be repeated. Science is limited in another area because it cannot explain the purpose of things either.
Only the cause of all things can explain the areas that science will never be able to explain – the beginning of things and the purpose of things. The Bible says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”2 The Bible goes on to say that, “all things were created by Him and for Him.”3
This earth is special to God and more specifically mankind is special to God. We have been made in His image with emotion, intelligence, will, morality and a creative ability which are all things that science cannot measure or explain. Unfortunately mankind messed things up but God offers salvation and restoration through His Son – Jesus Christ. The Bible says, “We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”4
Now that is purpose for living!
